Black and white and red all over

Invariably the first question, a coaches wife asks when the coach tells them they are moving to a new school is: “What are their school colors?” There’s nothing worse than being saddled with a school color that just doesn’t work for you. When we went to black and yellow, that’s where I drew the line and stopped trying to blend in with the home crowd. From that point on, I just wore whatever I wanted. Sure, I get chastised a bunch but a woman’s gotta do what a woman’s gotta do. So, as some of us get used to new school colors, or a change to the crisp Friday nights, I thought this article from the Dallas Morning News could give some inspiration on how to update your fall wardrobe. Looking good doesn’t mean spending hundreds of dollars. I constantly scour Goodwill and thrift stores. If it doesn’t work, I’m not out much money. Plus, to me, the hunt is almost as exciting as the find.

The best candidate is a sharp candidate

One of my co-workers in the newsroom always joked that a certain political candidate had her vote because he was known for dropping off tons of emery boards each time he made a run — and he made a lot of runs at office. We quickly filed them away in our desk drawers because accepting political gifts was and still is a big no-no, but a girl’s gotta look good, right? It soon became a habit for us to file our nails while talking on the phone - andwe talked a lot on the phone  trying to set up interviews. To this day, I still keep a nail file on my desk and reach for it out of habit each time the phone rings. But I went through them rather quickly and each time I picked up a few at Walgreens, I would forget to pull them out of the plastic bag and inadvertently threw them away. It was only after reading this article in 15 Minute Beauty Fanatic, that I heard about glass nail files. The blogger Christine said they could be picked up at any card store counter. Imagine my surprise the next time I went in and saw it sitting right there. I grabbed one with a painted golf ball on the end (natch) and have filed away more quickly and efficiently ever since. And the best part is, it lasts forever and is easy to clean and costs only about $10. Good thing my co-worker and I have moved out of that candidate’s district. We wouldn’t need his freebies any more.

I surrender

I am mourning the loss of my white strappy sandals and my white ballet flats this Labor Day. They won’t see sunlight until Easter unless I feel daring. I’m not a conformist but more of a traditionalist….I don’t like to break rules. So, while many fashionistas breezily wear white into the fall and winter, I can’t bring myself to do it. The rule has its roots in the 50s when the upper class wanted to distinguish itself from the lower class who they believed didn’t know proper etiquette. Isn’t putting others down poor etiquette as well? One of my favorite bloggers, Manolo's Shoe Blog gives his take on this age-old question. On the up side, it may be a good time to see if I can snag a pair on sale for next summer. I think I need a shoe with a little bit of a heel….preferably in 8 1/2.

Paint the town red

Maybe your team didn’t end up in the win column last weekend and you need a little pick-me-up, or you need something to celebrate a win. Whatever your excuse, pick your poison. Me, I am going to give myself a pedicure with my “new” nail color from OPI - I'm Not Really A Waitress. It’s OPI’s best-selling shade and the title of its book looking back at 25 years of developing nail lacquers. I had fallen in love with “Queen of Chiba” last year and recently compared the two bottles and they are remarkably close. The bonus: I don’t have to spend any money and I have an extra day on Labor Day to let them dry before I tackle this week’s Homecoming float.

Pretty in black

How cute is Elizabeth Dodge in this photo? I like how she is holding - no cradling her daughter, Molly. And that the color that pulls them all together - black - starts with the masculinity of her son, Riley’s black Southlake Carroll pants, and transitions down the line to her floral print shift. Southlake always holds a special charm for me because of Southlake Town Square - an outdoor shopping mall that is aesthetically charming and where I snagged two Lilly Pulitzer sweaters at 50 percent off and a pair of Lucy shorts at 75 percent off. The story in DMagazine covers Southlake Carroll’s quick emergence as a dominant powerhouse and one of the most desired places to live in North Texas. Talk about a pressure cooker for a coaches wife. What made me think of Elizabeth Dodge tonight were the highlights just shown on ESPN of the University of North Texas - OU game. Her husband recently moved to head the Denton program, which ushers in different responsibilities and pressure for the wife. As always before a game, I pray first for the safety of the players, but secondly, I pray for the wives and a sense of calmness. Prayers were lifted to Elizabeth Dodge tonight and all other wives of college coaches. Be blessed.
