In the can

The Austin American-Statesman is one of the best sources for Friday Night Lights news. I had read conflicting reports regarding the impact the writer’s strike would have on the series filmed in the Austin-area, but this latest news is good for fans of the show: six shows are in the can while other series are depleted and will rely on reruns. I still love the show but I have two pleas: I am glad to see they are slightly re-tooling the intro (it looks better), but please go back to the original version. The clip of Tim Riggins in the locker room before the first game is necessary to capture the feel of the series. And, two: you have some of the best writers in television. You don’t need to rely on promiscuous scenes to capture an audience. Believe in your abilities. The conversation Tami and Eric had two weeks ago regarding their relationship - priceless.

Good game plan

I am still catching up (via DVR) on last week’s episode of Friday Night Lights. I am behind because basketball kicked off with a vengeance this week and I can’t get past one scene. I keep replaying it to make sure I heard it correctly. As an administrator and booster club member try to find ways to bump Coach Taylor’s salary up to its previous level without dipping into extra funds, Coach Taylor was given the added responsibility of Athletic Director, overseeing all Dillon athletic programs. When Coach Taylor expressed concern because of time constraints, the administrator brushed him off, reassuring him that (and I’m paraphrasing here: Nothing to worry about. The departments pretty much run themselves. It’s just a figurehead position. Won’t take any extra time…) Now, that’s funny! I still love the show, though and was worried that the writer’s strike may affect its future. But the New York Times reported yesterday that shows, such as FNL are in better shape because when other series are showing reruns, FNL will have new, fresh material and may finally attract the new viewers it deserves. FNL started production early and cranked out 15 episodes. Someone deserves a star on their helmet for developing a good game plan. So for now, I’ll overlook the AD scene.

Monday night football?

I know I am going on and on about Friday Night Lights, but hear me out. I did an informal poll this weekend (I asked a couple of my friends who are married to coaches) and none of them had seen the show as well. And, why? Because it’s on Friday nights. And, we all know where we are on Friday nights! There’s a move underfoot to change it to Monday nights, and I hope they do because I think a big draw would be the people who live the lives of the people portrayed in Dillon, Texas. The main hook for me on this show is the relationship between Eric and Tami - the coach and his wife. I enjoyed this read in the New York Post. I hope you do too.

Extra, extra

KXAN-TV is reporting tonight that Friday Night Lights is looking for extras to portray fans during filming on Thursday and Friday nights. Call 512 707-7934 between the hours of 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. And, you get paid. Road trip, anyone?

Friday Night Lights

My mother urged me repeatedly the past year to watch Friday Night Lights but I never got around to it. I read the book years ago but never got around to watching the movie as well. I do not watch a great deal of TV, because I can’t sit still while laundry and dishes beckon. My mother rarely asks me to do anything, so I purchased the DVD set the day it was released and began watching it Sunday during a long road trip. I have not gone to bed before 1 AM since then trying to cram in as many episodes as I can. I have five episodes left, so sshhhhhh, don’t tell me what happens! My brother and his wife told me Sunday they initially enjoyed the series but as the season progressed, it became less about football and more about relationships. But those relationships are what I love about the show. Watching the lives of the Dillon Panthers being played out on my laptop night after night is what I need right now. The coaches’ wife - Tami Taylor - is a character developed by Hollywood screenwriters week after week. But she lives my life, and she shows me how to laugh at myself and gives me food for thought. I need that. Don’t we all?

It’s dynamite on Friday night

Following on the heels of yesterday’s post on free stuff - here’s another one - the DVD box set of Season One of Friday Night Lights. My mother and others constantly asked if I watched this show but I never got around to it. I planned on buying the collection when it came out yesterday, but I may wait a few days to see if I can score a free DVD. The season premiere is Friday, October 5. I will have to record it because I will be busy watching our school’s version of Friday Night Lights.
