I just need five extra minutes….

Coaches wives are no different than any other time-pressed woman. But, I like to think we are even more pressed for time because not only are we raising a family on our own while the coach is off raising other people’s kids, we are never home. As I try to pack bags with everything I will need for a night on the field or in the gym, freshening up my face gets the last-ditch effort. And really, it should be the first thing which I should tend to. I found this cute little blog, Jolie in NYC and a video clip of the blog’s author on the Today Show, and it had some great tips. 1. Use great foundation 2. Swipe of bronzer ( if pressed for time use bronzer as eyeshadow, I have used blush before) 3. Blush 4. Curl the lashes (5 seconds on each lash) and 10 swipes of mascara on each side 5. Lip gloss. I also like to include Bobbi Brown's concealer as part of my five-minute routine and just put on the lipstick in the car or some faraway gym if I can move the cheerleaders out of the way. They are cute enough!

If you only have time to read one make-up blog…..

Then you have to read this one, and you must read it for the next 40 days. I became addicted to Blogdorf Goodman last year during her reviews of 40 of her favorite beauty products. This year, she is producing 40 Days and 40 Nights of Beauty Cult Classics. I have come to rely on her recommendations before making any make-up related purchase. I have tried many items from her exhaustive list, and I’ve never been disappointed: from the Laura Mercier Secret Brightening Powder to the Elizabeth Arden Flawless Finish Ultra Smooth Pressed Powder, her advice has been dead-on. As coaches wives, we can’t help but love the kids who devour their sport and pour their hearts and souls into following the coaches’ vision. The same with Blogdorf Goodman. Her passion bleeds through. Read. You won’t be disappointed.

It all starts with the tools

I don’t like recommending products until I have tried them for a good while, but it’s been more than three months since I won the Prescriptives Curvilinear Cheek Brush in the Beauty Snob contest, and I’ve got to tell you - I’m hooked. I haven’t used another since I first unpacked it from its box. The brush conforms to the angle of your cheek giving you the perfect sweep. As someone who was turned onto make-up relatively late in life (I know, I know — it’s called aging), I have been scouring books trying to find the best way to apply make-up and constantly read beauty blogs to perfect my application. One coaches wife on our staff always looks flawless and I just want to sit at her feet every morning to see how she does it. One thing I learned several years ago is that you have to have good tools to apply products. You can purchase the most expensive products from NorthPark at Neiman Marcus, but if you are using the applicator that came with the product, it’s just not going to look good. The coach wouldn’t send his team out to play in the in the state championship game with a football he bought off the shelf at a discount store, and you don’t need to cheat yourself when it comes to your arsenal of brushes. Available at Prescriptives for $30. I think I may go back for the foundation brush when they advertise a GWP (gift with purchase.)

Beauty booty

Been meaning to tell y’all about this contest for a long time. I love the Dallas Morning News’ Beauty Booty contest because - 1. I have won it in the past 2. The artwork and photo illustrations in their F!Dluxe section are inspiring and beautiful and 3. I just love the name. Great prizes and all it takes is registering at the Dallas Morning News site, which is free. You should be subscribed to the newspaper anyway, because it is chockful of news and has the latest on many of your coaches sports teams.

You’re beautiful

The first three things I do every morning are: make coffee, turn on the computer and visit my three favorite blogs: Blogdorf Goodman, The Bag Snob and Beauty Snob. Now that I am in my 40s (OK, I have been for awhile), skin care has taken precedence over everything. Even basketball. I enjoy Beauty Snob for its daily write-ups, but I also am addicted to their daily contests. This month-long contest is their best yet. I’ve won Beauty Snob’s contests twice before, and I promise I won’t play again if I win this month. (Don’t believe it)

Beauty at a bargain

I told you yesterday how much I love special deliveries. They are even more fun when I don’t have to pay for them. That’s why I love looking at all my favorite beauty sites for contests. There’s tons of them. Check this one out at Lipstick Powder 'n Paint

The best candidate is a sharp candidate

One of my co-workers in the newsroom always joked that a certain political candidate had her vote because he was known for dropping off tons of emery boards each time he made a run — and he made a lot of runs at office. We quickly filed them away in our desk drawers because accepting political gifts was and still is a big no-no, but a girl’s gotta look good, right? It soon became a habit for us to file our nails while talking on the phone - andwe talked a lot on the phone  trying to set up interviews. To this day, I still keep a nail file on my desk and reach for it out of habit each time the phone rings. But I went through them rather quickly and each time I picked up a few at Walgreens, I would forget to pull them out of the plastic bag and inadvertently threw them away. It was only after reading this article in 15 Minute Beauty Fanatic, that I heard about glass nail files. The blogger Christine said they could be picked up at any card store counter. Imagine my surprise the next time I went in and saw it sitting right there. I grabbed one with a painted golf ball on the end (natch) and have filed away more quickly and efficiently ever since. And the best part is, it lasts forever and is easy to clean and costs only about $10. Good thing my co-worker and I have moved out of that candidate’s district. We wouldn’t need his freebies any more.

Paint the town red

Maybe your team didn’t end up in the win column last weekend and you need a little pick-me-up, or you need something to celebrate a win. Whatever your excuse, pick your poison. Me, I am going to give myself a pedicure with my “new” nail color from OPI - I'm Not Really A Waitress. It’s OPI’s best-selling shade and the title of its book looking back at 25 years of developing nail lacquers. I had fallen in love with “Queen of Chiba” last year and recently compared the two bottles and they are remarkably close. The bonus: I don’t have to spend any money and I have an extra day on Labor Day to let them dry before I tackle this week’s Homecoming float.

A little help from your friends

I have the best friends. I really do. Last week, one of my friends gave me a bottle of her new miracle product - Village Naturals Therapy for the Body Muscle Relief lotion from The Village Company. She knows I spend up to 12-14 hours in front of my computer and thought I could dab a little on my neck when I started getting headaches. I tried it several times this week and it worked. Be warned, it smells like BENGAY (which brings me back to my high school days during the first week of softball practice), but with a fresher fragrance (juniper, sage. wintergreen). She found it at our local Walmart. So, it’s affordable as well. I couldn’t resist surprising her the next week with my new miracle product Boots 4-in-1 Wipes

Coincidence, or not?

One of my buddies wrote this hilarious column today in the Amarillo Globe-News on pet peeves. On the same day, one of my favorite bloggers, celebrity make-up artist Elke Von Freudenberg wrote an entry on make-up pet peeves. My eyes quickly ran down the entries, hoping my morning routine wasn’t glaringly pointed out. I previously have shared my late start finding the make-up counter, and I constantly read books and blogs to improve my techniques. Elke’s entry is a good read and gives some good tips. Enjoy.
